Our latest Pulse reveals that concerns have gone from bad to worse for Australians, with many people worried about everything, all at once right now.
We’ve seen big increases in the level of concern about women’s safety and crime as people are reckoning with the underlying causes of inequity and the impact of these deep, structural tensions in society.
But paradoxically, more than two-thirds of Australians are happy with life which talks to how safe and stable Australia is relative to so many other countries right now.
The stark truth is that when 19 out of 20 Australians are concerned about the cost of living, then all of our institutions – from banks and supermarkets to politicians and employers – are all responsible for alleviating society’s real stress. It’s not acceptable to make huge profits or discuss economic growth when people are struggling to make ends meet and this tension seems to be fuelling domestic violence and other crime concerns.
